Australia’s Outback is feeling the impact of the current skills shortage. As more and more men are lured away from farms into the more lucrative work offered by the mining industry, station managers are having to move with the times and are beginning to recruit women into roles traditionally held by men.
Cattle stations are reporting a surge in interest from women wanting to trade their city lives to become a jillaroo, the female equivalent of a jackaroo, many of them inspired by the Aussie TV series, ‘Mcleods Daughters’, which depicts a family of women running their own station.
