Temporary residents of Australia are set to make gains from recent changes to the structure of superannuation frameworks made by the federal government. The revised law means employers will be able to make superannuation guarantee payments for temporary residents the same way it would a typical employee.
The changes have been made to help encourage skilled migrants to enter Australia to ease the skills shortage the country is currently suffering from.
“This new administrative approach produces a fairer outcome for temporary residents as their superannuation will remain in their fund while they are in Australia, rather than swept out annually,” said minister for superannuation and corporate law, Senator Nick Sherry.
