Gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg has been issued with a visa to enter Australia for a tour, despite previously being banned from the country on character grounds. The rapper, who’s real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., has a string of convictions against him, dating back to 1990, including drugs and firearms offences and has even been acquited of murder after a man was shot from a car that the star was travelling in.
The overturning of the previous ban has caused outrage and controversy amongst Australia’s victims of crimes groups who are calling for the immigration authorities to reverse their decision. “Snoop Dogg trades in toxic messages of menace, violence, misogyny and lawlessness,” Angela Conway, of the Australian Family Association told a paper.
Snoop’s ban was imposed under Australia’s last conservative government. The new Labour government is slowly softening immigration laws that came into being at that time in order to promote immigration and to smooth the entry of much needed skilled migrants.
